As Hand Middle School students reach the fourth quarter of the 2007-2008 school year, the air is filled with excitement of spring festivities and anticipation of the next school year. We were thrilled to be recognized by the South Carolina State Department of Education as a 2008 Palmetto Silver Award winner. We are maintaining our high expectations as we “go for the gold.” Our classroom instruction includes the twelve powerful words, such as analyze, infer, evaluate, formulate, support, and predict. Through systematic, deliberate and intentional applications of these words in our academic standards, our students engage in meaningful higher order thinking.
Our students are receiving standards-based instruction in all subject areas. The standards set clear, high expectations for student achievement. The results of the Palmetto Achievement Challenge Test (PACT) on grade-level curriculum standards show if students have demonstrated mastery of these standards.
Modifications to PACT administration throughout the state have been made for this school year. All students in grade seven will take the PACT in all four subject areas, English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. All students in grades six and eight will take the English language arts and mathematics areas of PACT, however, students in grades six and eight will take either the science or social studies test. The school will not find out which test the sixth and eighth grade students are taking until testing time.
The dates for PACT testing are as follows:
Monday & Tuesday, May 13-14: English Language Arts
Wednesday, May 15: Mathematics
Tuesday, May 20: All seventh grade students will take the science test. All sixth and eighth grade students will take either a science or a social studies test.
Wednesday, May 21: All seventh grade students will take the social studies test. Sixth and eighth grade students can make-up a missed test due to an absence.
Thursday, May 22: Field Test for all students
May 16 & May 19: Make-up tests for ELA and mathematics
May 23 & 27: Make-up tests for any subject area
Our students have experienced three quarters of preparation and are in their fourth quarter of their academic year. This quarter is an essential component in our students’ year long success. Concentration and focus are essential contributors to student success. Student achievement is supported by our families ensuring our students get a good night’s sleep and eat a healthy breakfast all year long and particularly during PACT testing. With an emphasis on our family and school partnership, the fourth quarter is sure to provide a successful finale for an exciting year at Hand Middle School. Thank you for allowing us to serve your students.
